Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are highly persistent, bioaccumulative man-made compounds that for decades have been used in the manufacture of everyday items such as fire-fighting foams, non-stick cookware and water-resistant fabrics. Their now ubiquitous presence in the environment poses a significant human health and environmental hazard, the extent of which is only now being understood. As a consequence, the need for increasingly stringent testing and regulatory guidance has never been greater.
