Studies performed on both radial (Spectro Modula ICP) and axial (Spectro EOP) ICP-OES instruments indicate that a 2-3 time improvement in sensitivity (and detection limits) can be obtained by changing from the conventional concentric nebulizer and Scott double pass spray chamber arrangement to a Modified Lichte Nebulizer (MLN) and Cyclonic Spray Chamber.
The modified lichte nebulizer incorporates a double bore glass tubing with an impact bead for fine aerosol dispersion. Operating principles are similar to that of the V-grrove design where the face of the nebulizer encounters a high velocity stream of argon gas that converts the sample into a fine aerosol. This novel design allows improved detection limits over standard pneumatic nebulizers whilst allowing solutions containing higher dissolved solids to be run without clogging.
